UK Forum 2007

The UK Forum for nonviolence is an opportunity for like-minded organisations and individuals to come together and exchange knowledge and experience; aspirations for the future and inspiration from the past.

The objects for which the Forum is established are:

  1. To promote the ethic and practice of active non-violence as the only valid methodology of social and political action for the present time, and as an internal and external attitude that favours life, so that the current physically, economically, racially and religiously violent direction of society can be changed to a new direction that opens the future and makes human development possible.
  2. To promote the relationship between individuals and groups working in the field of non-violence, through the organisation of gatherings and meetings for interchange with the intention of making each groups interests and aspirations known, and more importantly, to allow a true dialogue, oriented towards the search for common interests and projects.
  3. To establish permanent contact with those groups and individuals with the interest of jointly disseminating and organising activities of the forum.

A violent approach to resolving conflict does not work yet the media continue to ignore the efforts of nonviolent activism preferring to dwell on violent incidents on every occasion when nonviolent events are organised to promote social change. Non-violence, moreover, is aimed at more than just conflict resolution. It is a methodology of action for revolutionary change towards a world of equal rights and equal opportunities for all.

The prevailing system uses violence in all its forms and in all spheres of human activity and concern. A new response is required to build a beautifully diverse coalition of organisations and individuals who can make the case for nonviolence, who can use the tools of nonviolence and who can grow the nonviolent activist movement.

The UK Forum for Nonviolence can be this new response.

With the only limits to participation being that the organisations and individuals taking part must reject all forms of violence and discrimination, the UK forum is an association in permanent activity. It is an ambit for coming-together and sharing, making common plans and strengthening the active nonviolence movement.

2nd October – International day of nonviolence

The United Nations has declared the 2nd October as the International day of nonviolence and to this end the UK Forum will plan a calendar of activities from here until October 2008 that culminates in a week of activities that draws the attention of the media, promotes the interests of the forum and places in the public consciousness the idea that a nonviolent approach to revolutionary change is not only possible but also essential for the survival and well being of humanity.
